While shopping for groceries, most patrons were wearing masks.  Some had masks over their mouth but not nose (why bother). What I noticed, though, bugged me a lot.  While politely keeping a distance, very few people actually made eye contact. People stared at where they were headed and/or at my cart’s front panel.  Hello - it’s me, a human.

  • Social distancing, physical distancing, doesn’t mean dehumanizing.
  • The virus isn’t like being threatened by thugs on the street; there’s no need to clamp down on your purse and walk with such intention that you don’t make eye contact.
  • In fact, NOW is the time rehumanization is needed more.
    • Make eye contact
    • Smile, even under your mask.
      • A smile comes from your heart and through your eyes.  Let it.
    • Say something to acknowledge the other person.
  • Model having a solid, unshakable presence.  The world needs your light-hearted, yet solid presence now more than ever.
